The air mobility sector is focused on building upon existing airport infrastructure to transport people and goods using innovative aircraft that offer a huge improvement in efficiency, affordability, and community-friendly integration over existing regional transportation options.
Value market research (VMR) compiled a report in which they explained that, because of the growing urbanisation and traffic congestion expected, urban air mobility(UAM) is expected to be more important than ever. UAM, in fact, provides a new way for people to travel around cities and urban areas while tackling traffic congestion.
According to their report, the global UAM is expected to expand from its current predicted size of 2.66 billion dollars in 2021 by 35.3% between 2023 and 2028.
The industry is moving at a pace that has not been seen in the aviation sector since the 1950s, and the region that is expected to hold the majority of market shares is Europe.
Europe at the moment is benefiting from a regulatory system that is benefitting startups in the sector, while the U.S. is still defining the rules. At the current pace, the U.S. expects to be ready to commercially launch their operations in 2024, while Europe might be ready in 2023.
However, both regions will have tests and launch prototypes before those dates: in fact, Spain, before the end of 2022, will launch its first aerotaxis tests in Santiago de Compostela, within the H2020 Amu-Led project of the European Commission’s SESAR program.
In the U.S., the company Eve Holding has announced that they will conduct their first american urban air mobility simulation in Chicago, with the purpose of understanding the ecosystem requirements surrounding these operations, and to showcase the benefits of UAM in one of the main American cities.
